THE HEWLETT-PACKARD SOLUTION

You must have a HP LaserJet IID, IIP, III, IIID, IIIP, IIISi, or 4 printer in order to use this solution.  The HP LaserJet +, 500+, and IIP Plus printers cannot use this solution.  

This solution will give you a PostScript printer when a JetDirect card, PostScript cartridge, and additional memory has been added to your HP LaserJet printer.


   The first item you need is an I/O card

HP DOES NOT SUPPORT "HOT" I/O'S ON THE HP LASERJET IID, IIP, III, IIID, IIIP AND IIIS PRINTERS.  DO NOT CONNECT MORE THAN ONE PORT AT A TIME TO THE PRINTER.  THE HP LASERJET 4 PRINTER DOES SUPPORT "HOT" I/O'S

There are several JetDirect cards for the HP LaserJet printers.  The most common card to purchase is the JetDirect for AppleTalk card.
The JetDirect card options are:

   The second item you need is PostScript

HP LaserJet IID, IIP printer 
You need the HP part number 33439Q PostScript Level 1 Cartridge.

HP LaserJet III, IIID, IIIP printer 
You need the HP part number C2089A PostScript Level 2 Cartridge.

HP LaserJet IIISi printer
You need the HP part number 33494C* PostScript Level 1 SIMM.

*This will only work on IIISi's with serial numbers greater than 3200

HP LaserJet 4 printer
You need the HP part number C2080A PostScript Level 2 SIMM.


 The final item you need is additional memory

HP LaserJet IIP, III, III, IIIP printer
The minimum amount of additional memory required for simplex letter size printing with the HP LaserJet IIP, III, IIIP printer is 1MB (the 1MB board is part number 33474B).

The HP LaserJet IIID printer needs at least 2MB additional to do simplex, letter and legal size and 4MB to do duplex, letter and legal size (the 2MB board is part number 33475B). 

In order to print on legal paper you need at least 2MB of additional memory (part number 33475B).

The maximum amount of memory is 4.5MB for the HP LaserJet IIP printer, 5MB for the HP LaserJet III printer, 5MB for the HP LaserJet IIID printer, and 5MB for the HP LaserJet IIIP printer.


HP LaserJet IID printer
HP memory has been discontinued for this model; however, because of dealer stock you may not have a problem finding memory for the printer.

HP DOES NOT SUPPORT THE USE OF THIRD PARTY MEMORY IN THE HP LASERJET PRINTERS.  HP CANNOT ENSURE THAT HP EQUIVALENT MEMORY WILL WORK IN AN HP PRINTER.   

The minimum amount of additional memory required for letter size printing is 1MB (part number 33443B).

In order to print on legal paper you need at least 2MB of additional memory (part number 33444B).

HP LaserJet IIISi and 4 printer
The HP LaserJet IIISi printer needs an additional 1MB for simplex, letter and legal printing (part number C2063A).  The HP LaserJet 4 printer needs a 4MB SIMM (part number C2065A) in order to print letter and legal when connected to a Macintosh.

In order to print duplex on the HP LaserJet IIISi printer, you need at least 3MB of additional memory.  It is best to buy the 4MB SIMM(part number C2065A) so that the printer can be upgraded in the future without removing the 1MB SIMMs.

There is also an 8MB SIMM** that can be used with the HP LaserJet 4 and the IIISi printers.

**The HP LaserJet IIISi printer must be serial #3200 or greater to use this SIMM
